In the Lower 48, land ownership and regulations present a complex patchwork for pilots seeking to land at remote sites or uncharted airstrips. Unlike Alaska, where vast stretches of public land under federal or state management offer more predictable access and established backcountry aviation policies, the Lower 48 is a mosaic of private, state, federal, and Tribal lands with varying—and often unclear—regulations. The lack of clearly marked boundaries, or public information about permissible landing areas, makes pre-flight research and landowner coordination essential.
We curated a thoughtful range of uncharted airstrips across the Western U.S., including 250 strips on public land, a few historic/abandoned strips with potential for restoration, and private strips for enhanced situational awareness and emergency use. Uncharted airstrips located on Tribal land are excluded.
